VOTERS might blame prospective councillors for a huge pay rise coming their way when they knock on doors ahead of next year’s elections, a councillor has warned. A body has recommended councillors in Wales get a £16,800 basic salary from May next year - a rise of 16.9%. You said . . .

Tim Mcdermott Genuine question – does anyone think 16,800 is a ‘generous wage’? Its nowhere near attractive enough to make it a viable career for anyone that isn’t either independently wealthy or retired.

Adrian Miller It’s never been a full-time job. It’s a voluntary role. Meirion Thomas Mbe Non-exec members on companies get around £50k year and they would do far more work that a councillor does as a second job. This is a good pay and some of them attend very few meetings.

Peter Adams What people do not realise is that councillors have no control over pay. It’s determined by an independant body.
