Janet Lewis, Green Hall It is with deep regret that we report, after a very sudden and short illness, the passing of Janet Lewis, of Green Hall, Pontargothi, at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen, on November 7, aged 65. Janet was the much-loved daughter of the late Maldwyn and May Lewis, a beloved niece and cousin, and a dear friend to many, including Iolo the little dog. A state registered nurse by profession, Janet was a well-liked and respected nurse at Glangwili Hospital and in the wider local community, and had devoted her life to the care and nursing of patients for over 40 years. While doing so, she also successfully obtained her diploma and BSC degree in nursing. Janet’s career included working on Padarn Ward and coronary care, and in the last 14 years she was a community nurse and a highly valued member of the Acute Response Team before retiring in 2017 at the age of 61. The public funeral service, which was held at Siloam Chapel in Pontargothi on November 20 at 10.30am, was conducted by the Rev Emyr Gwyn Evans. The opening Welsh hymn was ‘Rho im yr hedd na wyr y byd amdano’, words by Elfed (1860-1953) to the tune ‘Rhys’. This was followed by a short preamble and reading of Psalm 23 by Community Cllr Haydn Williams of Llangain. The detailed and appropriate eulogy was brilliantly delivered by the Revd Euryl Howells, the senior chaplain of the local Hywel Dda Health Board based at Glangwili Hospital. It contained a poem entitled ‘Nurse’, originally written by Lois Sigmon Turley, RN, and based on the book of Proverbs, chapter 31, in which the wisdom and virtuous character of a woman is emphasised. The final hymn was ‘Nid wy’n gofyn bywyd moethus’, words by Gwyrosydd (1847-1920) to the tune ‘Calon Lan’. The organist was Meleri Cray. The music on departure was a song called ‘Ashokan Farewell’ written by American husband and wife artists, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. The funeral was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth. Refreshments were offered at the Cresselly Arms, Pontargothi, after the service. Janet’s family and friends wish to acknowledge with gratitude every expression of kindness and sympathy. Also, a special mention of Alison Harries from Carmarthen and Andrea Hill of Llangain (close friends and former colleagues) for helping with the necessary arrangements both prior to and post-funeral. Donations in memory, if desired, to CDU Glangwili Hospital received by the funeral directors, namely, Glanmor Evans and Son, Login Chapel of Rest, Llangunnor Road, Carmarthen, SA31 2PG. Iolo now has a new and another loving home at Cefnbryn, Heol Smyrna, Llangain. So Janet can certainly Rest in Peace! ‘Hedd Perffaith Hedd’.
