HARRIERS ACES BAG SUCCESS

EIGHT Carmarthen Harriers athletes made the journey to Liverpool to represent club and country.

The third fixture of the 2021-22 British Athletics Cross Challenge Series was held at Sefton Park and it hosted the European Cross Country Championsh­ip trials for the event in Dublin later this month.

The day began with the European Men’s Short Course Relay Trial over a fast 1.5km. Iestyn Williams finished 14th (4:43).

William Coles (under-13) and Iwan Thomas (under-15) followed up their third-place finishes in Milton Keynes a fortnight ago with more success in Liverpool.

In their respective races, Coles finished fourth (10:40) and Thomas was fifth overall (9:46).

Thomas’s team-mate Jake Lynock also ran in the under-15 boys’ category, crossing the line in 30th position (10:33).

The distance for the under-17 men’s race was 5.5km and Steffan Davies completed the course in 72nd (19:42).

Sixteen athletes in the under-17 women, under-17 men, junior women and junior men’s categories were selected to represent the Welsh team, which included Eva Edwards and Dafydd Jones.

Edwards was 31st overall (16:17), while Jones came in 42nd (21:35). Both were the third Welsh athlete home in their events.

The final event of the day saw the Senior Men complete three large laps, with Huw Davies finishing 357th (41:14).

Next up in the new year is a trip to Belfast on Saturday, January 22, followed by the fifth and final race of the series at Loughborou­gh’s Prestwold Hall in March.

Elsewhere, the West Glamorgan Cross Country League returned, with the first fixture taking place at Singleton Park in Swansea.

A total of 34 runners from Llanelli Athletics Club participat­ed at the first of five races this season.
