Manon bags super silver

TAF Running and Orienteeri­ng’s star junior cross country runner Manon Phillips showed a tactical awareness beyond her years when she took runners-up spot in the under-11 girls’ race at the third Gwent League fixture at Pembrey Country Park.

Placed third on the final descent of the dunes, the nineyear-old Peniel School pupil closed on the two leaders in a determined effort on the long run-in, splitting two Swansea Harriers and also gaining silver in the West Wales Championsh­ips, which were held in conjunctio­n.

Behind her, Maisie Foster showed her steady improvemen­t to finish 12th, while newcomers to cross country, Gwenno Powell and Angharad Fabillia, were 41st and 42nd.

In the under-13 girls’ race, Hanna Pasell was 55th, while Lewis Wigley was 35th in the under-11 boys’ race.

Fifteen of the club’s ladies took part in the senior ladies’ race. Mel Holliday, Lindy Eynon and Mary Anthony all placed in the top 100, paving the way for a convincing team win in the F55 category, and leaping two places to head this category with two fixtures remaining.

Four of the club’s ladies took part in the first West Glamorgan League fixture at Singleton Park in Swansea.

Mair Morgan was 56th, Jayne Evans 112th, Ann Rowell 137th and Pauline Thomas 163rd.
