Entries are now open for teams to enter raft race
THE popular raft race will be part of this summer’s Carmarthen’s River Festival and entries are now open for teams to enter their DIY rafts.
The festival returns to the River Towy and the town’s Quay for the first time in three years on Saturday, June 11.
Festival organisers are now issuing application forms for the day’s raft race.
River Festival chairman Phil Grice said: “The cost of entry is £30 per raft and organisations may retain any funds collected in excess of £30 from their sponsors.
“There will also be an inflatable race again this year. Application forms and the £2 entry fee will be available on the day.
“Prizes will be available for best dressed inflatable, and first across the line.”
The raft race has long been a highlight of the festival, with the teams often taking to the water in wacky and innovatively-designed rafts.
Organisers are confident that the public will pull out all the stops for this year’s festival after it has not being held since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The festival is due to start at 2pm and run into the evening.
Mr Grice added: “We expect that all the usual activities both on the quayside and on the water will take place this year.
“Our last festival was in 2019, three years ago, and I am obviously delighted that we can now start up all over again.
“The festival will include opportunities for children to have boat rides as well as funfair rides on land. “There will also be coracle racing and many more events for all ages to enjoy.” The festival has been staple of the town’s summer calendar for many years and organisers are hoping for bumper crowds in June to mark its return after the difficult times of the pandemic. Further details and exact times will be announced over the coming months as preparations continue towards the big day.
