HARRIERS END TERM ON A HIGH

THE fifth and final John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League event of the 2021-22 season was held at Singleton Park in Swansea.

The league had visited four other locations – Cardiff, Brecon, Pembrey and Bristol – earlier in the season.

It featured men’s, women’s and junior races and was open to runners of all ages from clubs in South Wales and the South West of England.

Carmarthen Harriers’ under-15 boys’ team won gold medals in the team event as well as boasting two individual medallists.

There was also success for the under-15 girls, under-17 men and under-20 men age groups, all finishing in third positions overall.

Llanelli Athletics Club’s senior women were 11th, while the senior men finished in 23rd place.

Attention now turns to the outdoor season, which begins on April 3 with the Swansea Harriers’ open meeting at the university’s sports campus.

The award is made in recognitio­n of a minimum of 25 years of active service to athletics in Wales at club, schools, regional and national level. Siggery has been coaching the javelin for more than 26 years. More than 30 of his athletes have won Welsh championsh­ip medals – including five champions last summer – and represente­d Welsh Schools or Wales since 1994. Other Carmarthen Harriers who have received the award include Ron Evans (1984), Hedydd Davies (1998), Stephen Perks (2016), Kevin Evans (2020) and Dorrien Thomas (2020).
