The club held its March Business Meeting at Coleg Sir Gâr, Pibwrlwyd on Wednesday, March 9.

Chairman Percy Jones welcomed members and guest Wyn Evans to the meeting. He recalled the St David’s Day lunch at the Falcon Hotel, and thanked Adrian Evans for his excellent presentation, prior to the toast to St David, given at the end of the lunch.

Percy reported that membership numbers are slowly growing again. The college had suggested we return to the meeting room used prior to the pandemic but it had been decided to continue with the current arrangements in the dining room for the time being.

Social secretary Myrddin thanked those that attended the St David’s Day lunch which had been a very successful event.

He reported that the Bristol trip was well supported, but the response to the Warner hotel break had been low. The Bristol trip would go ahead, but the Warner trip would have to be cancelled. More local trips and theatre visits will be planned for the near future and may be better supported.

Eddie outlined current arrangements for the cooking sessions held on Tuesday afternoons in the college’s kitchens. Restarting the ten-pin bowling is currently proving difficult because of key members’ availability during weekdays. Percy reported that he was hoping to organise a car and walking treasure hunt during the summer.

Competition Secretary Tony circulated a monthly competition, which had been a regular activity prior to the pandemic. Welfare secretary Neil reported that a few members were suffering with Covid but were on the mend.

In his role as programme secretary, Percy reported that speakers were arranged for the next two months with the Rev Morley Jones in April and Eluned Rhys in May.

The speaker for the day was member David Harris who entertained members with the real-life story of Judge John Johnes who was murdered in his library at Plas Dolaucothi.

The story began in Ireland in the home of Captain Charles Cookman, husband of Charlotte Johnes daughter of Judge Johnes.

Henry Tremble was employed as stable boy and worked his way up to become Captain Cookman’s valet. On the Captain’s death Charlotte returned to the family home in Dolaucothi with Henry Tremble. Henry advanced in the Judge’s household to become the family’s butler.

A disagreement over the tenancy of The Dolaucothi Arms public house led to Tremble killing the judge with a shotgun and seriously wounding Charlotte. Tremble eventually shot himself in his home in the village of Caio and was buried in the local graveyard as was Judge Johnes.

The murderer being buried in the same graveyard as the victim caused considerable unrest and resulted in Tremble’s body being dug up and moved to another cemetery. Unfortunately, the body was dug up again and returned to Caio graveyard. Tremble’s final resting place is unknown.

The vote of thanks for an excellent unscripted talk was given by Allan Skyrme. Members enjoyed an excellent three-course lunch, served by college students.

Lampeter

Ramblers Coed Tregib is an area of ancient woodland, a SSI site managed by the Woodland Trust. From here, some of the finest walking routes in Carmarthenshire can be accessed in the direction of Castell Carreg Cennen, in the shadow of the Black Mountain and Bannau Sir Gâr. So we knew by the location that we were to be led on a treat of a walk this Saturday, led by Anne and Jackie, our Llansawel members. Ascending through the Tregib woodlands, we headed in an easterly direction in full view of the mountains and Cwm Cennin pastures to Cwm Canol, Treiorwg and Gelli Groes, to meet the Ammanford to Ffairfâch section of the Heart of Wales Trail. Our way continued on field paths in the direction of three abandoned holdings, long unoccupied, of Lan, Cil-maen-llwd cottage and the more substantial Cil-maen-llwd Farm, a grade two listed building, home of six generations of Lloyds who were descended from Urien Rheged. Here, in former times, horse races were once held in a field nearby. Lan, a tiny traditional crog loft cottage, was a perfect lunch stop, with direct views over to Carreg Castell Cennen, about a mile away. Now heading up to the disused quarries of Cil-maen-llwd and Hafod Farm, our route followed back on a network of footpaths to Coed Tregib via Llwyn-bedw and the completion of our 7.5-mile ramble. On Saturday, March 19, Ron and Megan Foulkes led on a pleasant seven-mile ramble circling Llys-y-frân Lake near Clarbeston Road, Pembrokeshire. This trip was particularly enjoyed by Lily-grace, Morgan and Cillian, our younger walkers, as there was plenty of time for them to enjoy the Adventure Playground afterwards. Visit www.ramblers.org.uk/ wales for details of our walks and a welcome awaits you to join us. We will be walking sections of the Heart of Wales Trail in the coming weeks, along with other walks in the Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion area.
