OTTERS SHOW STAR QUALITY

-

NARBERTH climbed to fifth in the Admiral National Championship with a 50-17 win at Glamorgan Wanderers.

The Otters played some outstanding rugby and scored seven tries.

The visitors made their intentions clear from the outset as a series of rucks paved the way for debutant fly-half Jonny George to force his way over for a try he duly converted.

George Macdonald went close to extending the lead, but Narberth did not have to wait long for their second try as No. 8 Richie Rees dived over after a powerful scrum. George converted again.

Minutes later a deft kick from George over the defence was collected by Jordan Roberts and two inside passes resulted in the supporting Rhys Williams running under the posts for another try which George converted.

George added a penalty to make it 24-0.

And the No. 10 rounded off a superb half for the visitors by converting a try by wing Josh Davies that was started by Macdonald.

A Wanderers try narrowed the gap, but Narberth hit back through a try by prop Bradley Davies. Superb athleticism by Roberts then created a try for Macdonald.

Narberth’s scoring was rounded off with a try by prop Dan Smith, with the Wanderers crossing twice in response.

The Otters host Cross Keys on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Newcastle Emlyn’s dream of a Principality Stadium appearance this season came to an end when they were beaten 35-6 by Penallta in the semi-finals of the WRU Plate.

Crynych took advantage of Emlyn’s absence from league action by replacing them at the top of One West with a 40-12 victory over Gowerton.

They are a point clear of Llangennech, who won 43-7 at Whitland. But both Llangennech and Newcastle Emlyn – who are just two points behind – have four games in hand on the new leaders.

Burry Port are the new pacesetters in Two West after beating Pontarddulais 30-15.

Kidwelly could emerge as their nearest challengers after they won 28-6 at Carmarthen Athletic.

Amman United bounced back from a derby defeat against Llandybie to register a deserved 3620 victory over New Dock Stars in Three West B.

The visitors made a bright start and Adam Gealy gave them the lead with a penalty.

But Amman hit back as George Clarke’s pass put No. 8 Tom Thorneycroft in for the opening try.

The Reds scored again soon after when a fine midfield break caught out the Stars defence and Thorneycroft crossed for his second.

A Daniel James surge soon scattered the Stars defence, creating space before flanker Jac Isaac finished off the move with a try.

But there was still time before the break for Stars to reduce the deficit when Ryan Tovey went over for a well-worked try, converted by Gealy.

And on the hour New Dock scored again, with Gealy going over after collecting a fine crossfield kick by Garan Davies. Gealy’s conversion made it 19-15.

A Joel Foster penalty increased Amman’s lead to seven points, but the visitors responded when Davies raced in unchallenged for an opportunist try. Gealy’s conversion to tie the scores came back off the post.

Amman rang the changes and claimed the bonus-point score when Thorneycroft picked up at the base of another solid scrum and crashed over for his hat-trick try. Foster added the conversion.

The scoring was completed late on when Foster’s fine break created space for Alun Lewis to cross. Foster converted.

Amman visit Cefneithin on Saturday, while New Dock entertain Furnace United.*
