CARMARTHEN Town AFC is holding a memorial day to honour its late secretary Gareth Jones as well as launching a youth scholarship in his name.

The event at the club’s Richmond Park ground from 1pm on Saturday, May 14, will be a celebration of the life of Mr Jones who lost his battle with cancer in November 2019, aged 63.

Mr Jones, known as “GO”, served as county councillor for the north ward in Carmarthen for a decade and was a leading light as secretary and a club director at his beloved Carmarthen Town AFC for many years.

During his time as county councillor on Carmarthenshire Council, Mr Jones served as the executive board member for education.

At the time of his death, the club paid tribute and said he was diligent in everything he did, both as a councillor and in his work as secretary of Carmarthen Town AFC, which was second to none.

Mr Jones was highly regarded by the Football Association of Wales for how well he ran Carmarthen Town

AFC and he played a part in the Dyfed and Carmarthenshire schools set-up.

Club director Jeff Thomas said: “Everybody who knew Gareth will remember him with a great deal of fondness as he performed his duties with humour and dignity, always with regards for others. It is fitting that the club will hold a day in his honour, starting at 1pm with a match involving former players and guests. It is hoped that the match will be wellsupported, something Gareth’s family will very much appreciate.”

Immediately after the match, formalities will include the announcement of the GO Jones Academy Scholarship, which will run alongside the long-established youth academy at the club.

Mr Thomas added: “This will be aimed at young footballers, irrespective of gender, who due to personal difficulties might not ordinarily get the opportunity to attend our Carmarthen Town Academy.”

It will be overseen by the academy’s head of coaching Mark Aizlewood, who said: “GO was a passionate supporter of youth football and to announce this scholarship in his name is a great honour for myself.”
