OWAIN WINS IT FOR WANDERERS

-

CARMARTHEN Wanderers recorded their first victory of the South Wales Premier League 2 season when they beat Cowbridge at Trinity Fields.

Batting first on an excellent wicket, the Wanderers recorded 270-5 in their 50 overs, with opener Owain Davies carrying his bat for an excellent 101 not out which contained seven boundaries.

All the Wanderers batsmen gave support, with Gareth Thomas (33) and Owain Binding (31) and a quickfire 23 not out from keeper Ifan Knott helping the score along.

Rhys Davies was the most economical Cowbridge bowler, conceding just 19 runs off his 10 overs.

In response, Cowbridge were at one stage 85-2. But leg spinner Owen Bailey took 5-27 in his 10 overs to ensure that the Cowbridge innings gained no further momentum and they were skittled out for 141, giving Wanderers victory by 129 runs.

Iestyn Scourfield took 2-42 in his 10 overs, while excellent fielding was also a factor in the Wanderers’ success.

The match ball sponsor was Davies Crane Hire Limited Carmarthen.

Llanelli suffered their second defeat when they lost by seven wickets at Pentyrch.

Iwan Rees (42), Rhys Westcott (36) and Rhys Harris (35) gave Llanelli a solid platform, but they slipped from 141-3 to 175 all out. Tegh Sehgal took 3-45.

The visitors remained in the hunt when they reduced Pentyrch to 1133, but the arrival at the wicket of Dominic Grosset changed the complexion of the game completely.

He blasted three sixes and seven boundaries in a 26-ball 55 that gave the hosts victory with more than half their overs remaining.

A brilliant 88 from Christopher Morgan was in vain as Gorseinon went down by three wickets at home to Mumbles.

Morgan struck four sixes and nine fours as Gorseinon were all out for 250.

Skipper Kieran Howells added rapid 47.

The hosts looked in control when Mumbles slipped to 43-4, but a stand of 152 between Max Phillips (95 not out) and Aneurin Norman (90) proved crucial as Mumbles won in the 46th over.

Christopher Mee took 4-29.
