Founding member challenges himself to 20 Fair Trade walks

- IAN LEWIS Reporter ian.lewis@walesonline.co.uk

A FOUNDING member of the Ammanford Fair Trade Town Group is challenging himself to 20 walks over the next year to mark the 20th anniversary of the town becoming the first Fair Trade Town in Wales.

Phil Broadhurst will join up with local, national and international Fair Trade supporters on a series of Fair Trade Way walks that will highlight the depth and range of support for Fairtrade, which is a global trading system that guarantees that the people who produce the goods bought with the Fairtrade logo are treated and rewarded fairly for the work they do.

Ammanford became the first Fair Trade Town in Wales, and just the fourth in the world, back in 2002.

The walks will be a big part of that awareness-raising over the next year, along with other community events, including, hopefully, the return of the Giant Fair Trade Banana Split, which had to be cancelled in 2021 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Phil is planning walks in and around Ammanford, but also further afield and said: “The first two walks I’m doing acknowledge the beginnings of the Fair Trade Towns movement.

“At the end of May I’ll be joining up with campaigners from Garstang, the first Fair Trade Town in the world, to walk a Fair Trade Way route in the Lake District.

“But the first one I am doing will be in Ammanford with the local Christian Aid Group, who are bringing local churches and chapels together for a walk during Christian Aid Week.”

He added: “Our local Fairtrade history began with small stalls set up in churches and chapels, selling Fair Trade tea and coffee.

“Now these products, along with hundreds more, are available in all the major supermarkets, but it is good to remember where it began.

“To see how little acorns can grow into mighty oaks thanks to the efforts of Fair Trade campaigners, producers, businesses, and shoppers is fantastic.”

The first walk was due to leave Ebenezer chapel at 10.30am on Saturday, May 21 with a route along the riverside path towards Glanamman and back, with Fair Trade refreshments at the end.

There are now Fair Trade Towns in every county in Wales, and Wales became the first Fair Trade Nation in the world in 2008. There are now over 2,000 Fair Trade towns and cities across the world.

Communities are awarded Fair Trade Town status by the Fairtrade Foundation, not only on the basis of having a range of shops and cafes selling Fair Trade products, but also by the amount of awareness-raising that is carried out by campaigners, schools, faith groups and others in the community.

The status has to be renewed every two years.
