Nerys plays her part in women’s triathlon world record
PEMBROKESHIREBASED Army corporal Nerys Jones, who runs for Taf Running and Orienteering (TROTS), played a large part in setting up the fastest ever women’s time for the Ironman distance triathlon in the Phoenix Sub7 Sub8 held at Brandenburg, Germany.
In this event, four elite triathletes with teams of up to 10 pacers deployed in any way across the three disciplines targeted the seven-hour barrier for men and the eight-hour barrier for women.
Jones is no stranger to competing at the full Ironman distance of a 2.4mile swim, 112-mile cycle and full marathon run, having completed Ironman Wales three times as well as several races abroad, but she was enlisted to pace her friend and fellow Army triathlete, Kat Matthews, on the final discipline.
Running at a metronomic pace of just under four minutes per kilometre for the marathon run over several laps of the airfield, she helped Matthews to a split of 2 hours and 46 minutes, overhauling the team of German race favourite Nicola Spirig with 10km to go. Matthews was well inside the eight-hour barrier, crossing the line at 7 hours 31 minutes.
Meanwhile, the popular Three Parks Challenge at Llandeilo saw 14 TROTS runners taking part.
Lindy Eynon was the F45 winner in 29th place overall, clocking 49 minutes 20 seconds over the undulating multi-terrain 10km course.
