Crusaders are well beaten in National Championship

- PETER DUNKLEY

A FIRSTROUND match in the open draw of the Welsh National Club Championship took place on Saturday at Parc Howard when Crusaders hosted Whitchurch from Cardiff, who proved to be a very strong team, winning the game with a high score.

In the Llanelli & District Premier League, following a close midweek match with Llanelli that saw Graig Merthyr take the spoils by a single shot, they went on to record a maximum-points win at home to Havelock Park.

Llanelli, however were well beaten on their visit to Parc y Dre. Loughor and Brynhyfryd reversed their scheduled fixture to avoid the crowds at Parc Howard for the Jubilee celebrations and Loughor came out on top, remaining unbeaten in their opening three matches following a return to the Premier division this year. Ammanford Park faced Burry Port at home for the second week in succession following their WBA Qualifier last week, resulting in an almost identical score.

In division one, Carmarthen have set out their stall in a bid to return to the top flight next year. A second big win, this time against visiting Calsonic Wanderers, put them well placed in the table, especially as they host division leaders Tybie at St Peter’s this weekend.

Tybie will be on a high after winning their opening three matches, the latest at the expense of Gorseinon. Gowerton picked up their first win this year, at home to promoted Parc William.

Division two hopefuls, Cross Hands took three of the four rinks at Cwmamman on Saturday, while in the local derby between Llangennech & Bryn and Pontarddulais, a single winning rink by the visitors was enough to result in a drawn game.

The remaining match saw Ammanford Town beat New Lodge at Gorseinon by one shot.

This weekend the Premier division is postponed as teams play in the National Championship, but will resume with midweek games on Wednesday.
