Albies miss chance to hit the top spot

-

THE game between Evans & Williams and Penlan was the only one to beat the icy conditions at the weekend in the Macron West Wales Premier League.

Evans & Williams knew that a win at Coleg Sir Gâr would see them top the table.

But Penlan also needed the points to remain in the hunt for league honours this season.

With Penlan missing several regulars due to suspension, the Albies were confident of completing a double over the Swansea side on their 3G pitch.

But midway through the first half, Darren Rowe scored his ninth league goal of the season to give Penlan the lead.

And it was doubled when captain Luke Edwards scored after 68 minutes, his sixth league goal of the campaign.

Penlan came away with a 2-0 win to avenge their 6-4 loss to the Albies at Mynydd Newydd in August, a result which keeps the pressure on South Gower and Morriston Town in the promotion chase at the top of the table.

Only two points now separate the top five clubs, with Penlan in sixth but very much in contention in the battle for silverware.

This Saturday, league leaders South Gower entertain Evans & Williams, while second-placed Morriston play Pontarddulais Town at the Dingle.

Clydach, in third, make the short trip along the Swansea Valley to Cwm Wanderers.

There have been six applications to date from clubs wishing to join the Macron WWPL for the 2023-24 season. Their promotion is subject to them meeting Tier 4 ground criteria requirements and a first or secondplace finish in their respective leagues at the end of the current season.
