Myrddin Probus Club, Carmarthen

-

MYRDDIN Probus held its first meeting of 2023 at the newly refurbished restaurant at Coleg Sir Gâr, Pibwrlwyd, on Wednesday, January 11.

In his opening welcome, chairman Percy invited members to stand in silent tribute to the late Des Hayes, a loyal and valued member for many years. There had been an excellent response to the St David’s Day lunch on March 1 at The Plough, Rhosmaen. Further details will be provided in the February meeting.

The possibility of a summer trip to Ireland, jointly with St Peter’s Probus, was raised.

However, a show of hands indicated there was an insufficient number interested in participating. As an alternative to the Irish trip, social secretary Myrddin will explore the possibility of a trip to North Wales, providing details by February.

Secretary Hugh announced the nominations received for the various officers of the club; these are to be voted on at the AGM.

The speaker for the day was retired Trinity St David’s lecturer Conway Davies talking about the Laws of Hywel Dda in the 10th century. King Hywel Dda brought together an assembly of men practised in the law and codified the customs and practices from the various regions of Wales. These laws were in many respects ahead of their time, particularly in relation to the rights of women and the notion of restorative justice.

Some of the laws may have seem bizarre through modern eyes; for example, the law relating to kissing only allowed a women to kiss her husband or father. A high value was placed on compensation for any breach of the law rather than physical punishment, with amounts of compensation set out in detail and dependent on the victim’s social status.

The vote of thanks for an interesting talk was given by John Meredith.

Myrddin Probus has supported Pibwrlwyd College and its restaurant for many years and was invited to send representatives to the official opening of the restaurant, now called Cegin Sir Gâr. Canapes were served on arrival, while college learners demonstrated their skills preparing mocktails.

Those attending then enjoyed a three-course lunch with learners demonstrating their practical skills in various courses. Simon Wright of Wright’s Emporium was the guest speaker.

The date of the next meeting is Wednesday, February 8. Myrddin Probus welcomes new members and guests. For information or to try out the club, please contact the secretary on 0779 2423370.
