LONG JOURNEY WELL WORTH IT
SIX weeks after representing the Welsh Schools Athletic Association in Glasgow, Carmarthen Harrier Jessica Lee made the trip to the North of England to compete in the England Athletics U20 & U23 Indoor Combined Events Championships.
Lee made her combined events debut in the new under-20 age group and enjoyed a great day in Sheffield, placing fifth overall.
The 60m hurdles (9.59), 800m (2:38.65), long jump (5.91m), high jump (1.66m) and shot put (8.98m) made up the pentathlon.
The fourth and penultimate fixture of the British Athletics Cross Challenge series visited Scone Palace in Perth, Scotland.
Running a distance of 6km, Iwan Thomas (20:08) was the first of the Carmarthen Harriers trio to cross the line, in sixth position.
Liam Edwards (20:24) and Finley Bruce (20:50) were ninth and 15th in the combined under-17 and 20 men’s age group, making the long journey worthwhile.
Thomas was also in action on the track at the British Milers Club Sheffield Indoor Grand Prix competition. His time of 8:44.55 in the 3000m was a new Welsh indoor under-17 best performance.
At the Cardiff Metropolitan University Non Thomas New Year Open,
Lewis Evans went in heat 2 of nine in the men’s 60m sprint, stopping the clock on 7.31.
Harrison Garcia was another athlete to compete in the shorter distances, this time in the 200m (23.69).
The 800m saw Iwan Wilson, Macsen Toogood and Jessica Hyland finish in 2:07.67, 2:13.58 and 2:21.33 respectively, while in the 3000m event, Dafydd Jones completed the 15 laps in a time of 8:44.08.
In the field, Cerys Angharad Jones cleared 2.11 metres in the pole vault.

Welsh Athletics, the national governing body, will host its annual indoor track and field national championships over the next two weekends in Cardiff, which are the highlight of the indoor season.
Meanwhile, 2,500 university athletes across the UK will head to Carmarthenshire for the British University Cross Country Championships on Saturday taking place at Pembrey Country Park.
