How events unfolded on day of sadness

Shortly after 11.15am: Police receive a call advising them of an incident at Amman Valley School. Welsh Ambulance Service is also called to the incident and sends four emergency ambulances and the hazardous area response team, supported by two paramedics and an operationa­l manager.

11.30am: Wales Air Ambulance mobilises three critical care teams – Dafen and Welshpool crews by air and Cardiff crew by road.

Shortly after noon: Concerned parents gather at the school gates. Some have not been able to speak to their children during the incident.

Others have been keeping in contact via text or Whatsapp, and have heard that children were escorted by police to get lunch – another says pupils are being escorted to the toilets.

1.16pm: Police confirm three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. They also say one person has been arrested and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. 1.30pm: By this point the air ambulance has left the scene. 3.10pm: Buses start arriving to collect the children. Roads in the area are gridlocked. 3.20pm: Children start coming out of the school. Emotional family members greet them.

4pm: The roads are clear. 4.53pm: Police issue an update, saying the incident has now concluded. A teenage girl had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody. The three injured people were two teachers and a pupil and have been taken to hospital. 5.51pm: Police give a further statement outside the school. Superinten­dent Ross Evans confirms the injuries of those taken to hospital were not life-threatenin­g.
