YOUNG ACES ON LONDON DUTY
IT’S been a busy time for Carmarthen Harriers juniors as some got their track and field seasons under way, while others represented Wales on the international stage.
The Welsh Junior League returned to the calendar with the first of three fixtures taking place at Swansea University.
It gave the opportunity for the younger age groups – under-11s, under-13s and under-15s – to get involved in grassroots competition.
The day concluded with the popular 4x100m relays.
Several athletes were making their competition debuts. The Harriers taking part were Cerys Evans, Rose Hobbs Rees, Megan Jones, Florence Morgan, Lois Murray, Haf Thomas, Gwen Fitzpatrick, Alys Tremlett, Tayla Williams, Cerys Fitzpatrick, Anya Walters, Paige-lily Williams, Manon Phillips, Elsie Davies, Teaghan Williams, Emily Evans-williams, Nansi Griffiths, Seren Bowen, Menna Fielder-hobbs, Summer Evans, Maisie Owen, Macsen Davies, Steffan James, Alfie Stopher, Buddy Evans, Maximus Edwards, Evan Enoch, Marleigh Mackie, Alex Ladd, Tomos Cai Davies, Dafydd Williams and Dylan Williams.
Cwrt Herbert Sports Centre in Neath stage the second round this weekend.
Elsewhere, 39 Welsh youngsters – including five from Carmarthenshire – represented Wales at the annual TCS London Mini-marathon.
The Mini-marathon for those aged 11-17 saw a series of championship age-group races covering the last 2.6k of the London Marathon route.
It provided an opportunity for athletes from Wales to test themselves against the best in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The finishing line was situated on The Mall outside Buckingham Palace.
There were first international vests in the under-13 age group for Tomos Cai Davies (9:49) and Manon Phillips (10:30) in their races.
Making a return was Nansi Griffiths, who stepped up to the under-15 girls’ category, clocking 9:29.
Macsen Toogood (8:35) and William Harries (8:41) were two of the six athletes selected in the under-17 boys’ team.
Further north at Keswick in Cumbria, the British Athletics Mountain Running Championships took place.
In the under-20 age group, there was an excellent top-10 finish for Iwan Thomas, who was seventh with a time of 30:51.
The Red Kite Summer Series began with Ras Hwyrnos Nant yr Arian near Aberystwyth.
There were Year 5 and 6 girls and Year 7 and 8 girls’ category victories for Emily Evans-williams and Paigelily Williams respectively.
