Retail store takeover
PLANS that will see a giant retail chain take over Ayr’s Matalan building have been given the green light.
We announced in February how Matalan bosses confirmed that the town’s store, off Parkhouse Street, would be closing in the summer.
The fashion retailer stated that the building’s owner has opted not to renew the lease, with work ongoing to secure jobs for the Ayr staff at other Matalan locations.
A Matalan spokesperson added that store was set to close this summer.
Now officials from South Ayrshire Council have approved plans to carry out alterations to the building that will see it transformed into a Home Bargains store.
An application was lodged with the local authority by Iceni Properties on behalf of Home Bargains owner TJ Morris Ltd..
Approved plans will see alterations to the external look of the building and new signage.
The new store is also set to be fitted with a café area.
The application paperwork states that “the proposal of development does not change the use of Unit 1, rather is in relation to the alterations necessary for the change in ownership from Matalan to Home Bargains”.
Home Bargains already has a store at Ayr’s Heathfield Retail Park.
It’s not yet clear if the new plans will involve a relocation of the existing shop or will be an additional store.
A supporting letter submitted along with the formal application adds: “The proposal represents an opportunity to refresh the existing retail unit via several external alterations.
“The change in ownership from Matalan to Home Bargains comprises a series of alterations to the exterior of all elevations, which are considered to be in keeping with the immediate surroundings and is considered to improve the wider amenity of the area.
“The proposal will deliver a modern and distinctive retail frontage which is considered to enhance the amenity of the area.”
SOUTH Ayrshire Council is flying high after winning a major award at the RAF Benevolent Fund Awards 2024.
The fund’s annual awards ceremony is an important opportunity for the charity to acknowledge, celebrate and thank its supporters.
The local authority took home the win in the
Outstanding Support from an Organisation or Group category, in a category alongside International Bomber Command Centre and The Beaujolais Run.
Actor and fund supporter Alistair Petrie hosted the awards for the second year on Thursday.
A council spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to have been recognised by our airshow charity partners, the RAF Benevolent Fund, at their awards ceremony last night.”
A spokesperson for the Benevolent Fund said: “Our partnership with the Scottish International Ayr Show has allowed us to reach more RAF veterans and their families in Scotland, as well as opening up new fundraising opportunities.”
