Scare-way spook!

Was my past life the link to my missing partner? Lisa Smith, 48, from south London

While working in a building, I felt a presence behind me on the stairs. There was no-one there, so I took a photo and saw an orb that resembled the face of the buildingõs architect, Arthur Beresford Pite. Jeane TrendHill, 48, London

P

icking up his holdall ready for a trip to Spain, my partner Joe Griffin, 48, kissed me, then our 10month-old Joseph goodbye.

Joe had been offered some work fitting new engines on a speed boat in Porta Banus.

It was March 1998 and we’d another baby on the way, so he’d leapt at the chance to make extra cash.

I agreed that we needed the money.

As well as Joseph and our bun in the oven, I’d three more kids from a previous relationship.

But I didn’t want Joe to leave.

Worries

I was dreading his trip. I had a terrible feeling that something was going to go wrong. I just couldn’t put my finger on what. ‘What if I go into labour early?’ I said. ‘Stop worrying,’ Joe soothed as I waved him goodbye. ‘I’m only going for a fortnight, I’ll be back way before this baby is born.’

When Joe arrived in Marbella, Spain, to meet a co-worker he rang to say he had arrived safely. Thank Heavens for that, I thought.

Maybe it was my pregnancy hormones making me worry.

No sign

The following day, Joe rang again to tell me he was going out on the sea to test drive the engines.

Only, when I tried ringing his mobile later, his phone went to an Arabic voicemail.

‘Perhaps there’s no reception,’ I reasoned. But as the hours ticked by and there was still no news, I became increasingly worried. My mind went into overdrive. Why had the call gone to an Arabic voicemail? Had they strayed onto the Moroccan coast?

Ringing Claire, the wife of Joe’s co-worker who lived in Spain, she confirmed she hadn’t heard from her partner since they’d boarded the boat either.

‘It definitely left the port,’ the authorities confirmed a few days later after frantic phone calls. ‘But there’s been no sign of them.’ Joe was reported as missing. Despite being heavily pregnant and having spent days anxiously pacing the floor, I could wait no longer.
