The noises came room from my attic

bed in the attic room. I enjoyed having her. So when she asked again the following week, I agreed. And again, the week after. Before long, she was using my house like her own. Every time she came, I’d cook. She even started requesting things. She asked me to pick up cigarettes and vodka for her. And she always slept in the attic room. Sometimes, she’d sit in there all day reading and drinking. It

Tired

‘She’s got you wrapped around her little finger,’ Mum said. ‘It’s not good for you, or her.’ Mum was right. I was exhausted with all the extra shopping and housework. She’d become demanding. I felt used. So… ‘I’m sorry,’ I said, next time she called. ‘I’ve enjoyed having you over, but I’m too busy to have you stay again.’ ‘You don’t want me to stay because you don’t like me,’ she said. ‘That’s not true,’ I insisted. ‘But things have changed between us…’

Cursed?

I said goodbye. And the very next day, the scratching started. Then the banging. ‘You need to go home right now!’ my colleague exclaimed at the end of my story. ‘Burn everything she might have left behind.’ I grabbed my bag and raced home. As soon as I opened the front door, I saw it in the hallway umbrella stand… A walking stick. She must have left it the last time she stayed. It was made of black wood. Carved into the top was a lion’s head. I lit the fire in my sitting room. Pushed the end of the walking stick into the flames and watched it burn. Later, I found several copies of the woman’s book stashed under the attic room bed. I burned them, too. Immediately, something seem to lift. The house felt brighter. The heavy atmosphere vanished. I no longer felt someone was watching me.

Quieter times

That night, there wasn’t a scratch or bang. Ambrose was happier, too. ‘It’s over,’ I cuddled him and Barney. I’ve since left Kew, and now live in France. But I’ve learned my lesson. The only people I let over the threshold these days are people I love. You never know what’s in someone else’s heart. Or when they’ll leave…

Dear Lucy

Whilst you can’t control someone’s will, you can encourage them to get in touch. Place a photo of the person in a dish. Sprinkle with sugar and liquorice root, found online. Burn a purple candle at the side of the dish every day for a week. As you light the candle, say: ‘With an open heart I’m calling you near. If it’s your will, then your voice I’ll soon hear.’
