l The word witch comes from the Old English words wicca or wicce, which means ‘wise one’ in both male and female form. Later, the word wicche was used in their place and became associated mostly with women. This changed in the 16th Century from wicche to the word witch that we recognise today. l In wiccan religion, it’s now once again somewhat common to use witch to refer to both men and women.
