The successful 2003 movie Monster is the semi-fictional account of Aileen Wuornos’ deadly rampage... Charlize Theron won the Best Actress Oscar for her eerily accurate portrayal of Wuornos. She put on 30lb for the role, and, with the help of prosthetic make-up, was made to look uncannily like Wuornos. Yet legal issues prevented producers using Tyria Moore’s real name, so they incorporated some dramatic licence. Instead, Wuornos’ lover in the story is Selby Wall, and is played by Christina Ricci, who looks nothing like her real-life counterpart. Selby is a petite brunette, while Moore was a plump redhead with missing teeth. The film-makers also employed poetic licence in the portrayal of the two women’s relationship, and of all the murders except Richard Mallory’s, which is considered to be accurately drawn.
