They don’t come cheap!

I go without so my kids can live in luxury

- By Sarah Speare, 26, from Liverpool

Everyone wants the very best for their kids, right? Well, I’m no different. I go above and beyond to give my twins Jacob and Jayden, 8, a life of luxury.

Designer clothes, the latest toys, extravagant holidays…

But I’m far from being a millionaire with cash to spare.

A single mum, I work hard to give my boys the best.

My own childhood was very different. Me and my sister Catherine, now 32, grew up on the breadline. Our clothes were bought in charity shops. And holidays were only things we could dream about.

At the age of 18, I met my first boyfriend.

It was a shock when I fell pregnant so quickly.

I was still just a kid myself. But I grew up overnight.

‘I’ll be the best mum,’ I decided.

In October 2008, the twins arrived.

Sadly, things didn’t work out with their dad, and being a single mum was tough.

But I scrimped and saved every penny and somehow we got by.

I wanted more for my boys, though.

‘They should have everything I never had,’ I told Catherine.

So, when they were 8 months old, I did a degree in Health And Social Care.

While the boys were at nursery, I studied hard.

And soon I got a part-time job as a care and support worker. I juggled my hours around the boys being at nursery and school.

Money was still tight, so I cut back on treating myself.

I cut my own hair, stopped getting my nails done, didn’t go out…

And the money I saved went on the boys.

I even splashed out on cute designer sandals for them, costing a whopping £300.

‘They’ll only get ruined,’ Catherine tutted.

But even at a young age, my boys took care of their things.

‘Need to clean my shoes, Mummy,’ Jayden would say, asking for a cloth.

The boys loved wearing the latest labels, so I tried to find copies on the high street.

Or I’d shop in outlet stores where the clothes are cheaper. ‘Mummy, is this high fashion?’ Jacob would ask, pretending to strut on a catwalk. I’d spoil the boys with the latest toys and gadgets, too. Then I’d skip lunch or dinner in order to save a few extra pounds. And my waistline benefited in the process. ‘Win win!’ I laughed. Each year, I’d spend a whopping £1,000 at Christmas. I spared no expense on holidays, either. To celebrate their 5th birthdays, I took the boys to Disneyland Paris for seven nights. And I paid for them to have a tea party with the characters. ‘Thank you so much, Mummy,’ they both beamed. In 2015, I took them to Morocco and, last year, we flew to Milan and Switzerland. I had to skip a few more meals and scrimp on things for myself, but it was worth it. Then, late last year, I was contacted by a pal on Facebook. Channel 4 are looking for single mums to film a
