‘She’s incredible’
Brian, 61, says, ‘When Diane was diagnosed at 41, we were devastated. For the next two years, I had to watch my wife of 26 years die.
‘At first, I was torn. I didn’t want Diane to die – but, as I watched the MND take hold, I came round to her way of thinking. No-one wants to see someone they love die a horrible, painful death if there could be a more dignified way to go. ‘Focusing on the campaign got us both through it. ‘At the end, Diane was on a lot of morphine, but she knew I was there. ‘Holding her hand, I told her, “I love you, you can go now.” ‘Then she passed away, and I was at a total loss.
‘Carol was patient and understanding. Her support is incredible.
‘Now, 15 years on, I’m still fighting the same fight. Since Diane’s death, assisted suicide has been legalised in The Netherlands and Belgium.
‘I won’t give up. And, while I’ll never stop loving Diane, that doesn’t mean I love Carol any less.’
