This week, the Prime Minister has brought in new measures as coronavirus cases rise across the UK, including here in West Sussex. The changes announced on Tuesday are in place to curb this rise and protect the most vulnerable in our society. I know that some people are fed up of not being able to live life as normal, whilst others feel we need tighter restrictions. However, I can assure you the Prime Minister made these decisions following advice from his senior scientists and Government ministers. In the end, every decision is a balancing act; between keeping people healthy in the immediate future, and protecting people’s livelihoods, the wider economy, education, and impact on other health outcomes.

The new measures bring in changes such as working from home where possible, and all pubs, bars and restaurants closing by 10pm. Along with these new measures, there will be tougher enforcement, although I am aware from my regular calls with the police and councils that, by and large, local people have done the right thing and followed the rules from the outset. I want to thank all of you and all our brilliant businesses who have gone above and beyond throughout this outbreak.

I visited one such business, Cornelius House care home in Fishbourne and saw their extraordinary work to keep their staff and residents safe. All the staff are tested weekly, and residents monthly, as well as being kept at a distance with their food now being brought to their rooms by staff in full PPE. Where residents require hospital treatment they have minimal contact in hospital and are kept in total isolation and regularly tested, on their return, for a period of time.

I also visited our local alpaca farm, nestled in the South Downs – a first for me. It is a very innovative business model and certainly different from the other farms I’ve visited. The alpacas produce warm, durable, soft wool perfect for jumpers, hats and socks

– but they’re also a wonderful visitor attraction especially in our new Covid world. I took one of the alpacas, Baron, on a walk. Which was such fun and a perfect escape for anyone feeling a bit housebound at the moment. Alpacas are very docile and friendly, and super cute - I definitely recommend a visit. For those that can’t visit, like the residents at Cornelius House, I was told the alpacas occasionally make the trip to them to brighten the residents days.

We are so lucky to live in this part of the world, with such fantastic community and business spirit, all with the most beautiful backdrop whether by the sea or on the downs.
