Honours are even as gauntlet is laid down

Selsey Golf Club’s course is in great condition– andeven better news is that members are able to enjoy using it again.

Grounds men martin kay and Roger Cawte worked tirelessly through lockdown to keep it in good nick, and the Selsey Country Club management team worked hard making it possible for the course to be opened for play again.

All sections are back to playing for their cups and trophies.

At the beginning of the year Gary Hughes, the Golf Club’s profession­al, left. The course now is marshalled by various members of staff .

The annual Ladies v Veterans competitio­n for the Silver Gauntlet ended in a draw with the teams winning thtee matches each.

This traditiona­lly starts when the lady captain takes the gauntlet and swipes the vets’ captain on the face ,( only gently !) and throws down the gauntlet.

The Max Faulkner Claret Jug, played in honour of a former owner of the club who was the 1951 British Open champion, involved 31 players and was won by Barry Rishman with nett 68, narrowly beating Florentino Alonso on countback.

The best junior score was by Luca Alonso with 69, just one shot behind the winners. The best ladies score was 74 by Alison Weller.

The Godding Bowl featured 24 players in mixed pairs playing foursomes. Winning pair were Craig Newman and Rita Green with a nett 62.5 and the runners-up were simon Aspital and mary carpenter with 64. The Godding Bowl was presented by club captain Matt Hurst and lady captain Alison Weller with miniature rose plants and wine as extra prizes.

For Selsey’s ladies’ section, the King Farlow, a twopart competitio­n played over two weeks, was won by Mary Carpenter with an incredible net score of 56. Jaqui Towns was runner-up with an amazing 61. Both had two shots cut off their handicap. As table ford was won by Grace bishop, and mary carpenter came second.

The men’s and veterans’ sections have also been able to play some of their annual competitio­ns. The Beldam Cup (men’s) was won by Simon as pita land john la key who scored 45 points, beating on count back matt hurst and Ash Houghtons.

A fun event for junior and men’s section members in the Texas scramble format had a sits junior winners Jack Lawson and Lloyd Hughes, who played with Gavin Lawson and Dan Russell.

Selsey juniors have had a few new members recently, to the delight of the club.
