Champs have to work hard for golf crowns

A total of 23 of Bognor Golf Club’s ladies braved the tough conditions for a Strokeplay and Handicap two-day competitio­n.

On Saturday a strong northerly wind plus the tough pin positions made it a challengin­g first round.

On Sunday the wind decreased but the dry conditions of the course and slick greens made play exceedingl­y tricky on both days.

Heather Tidy was the winner of the Strokeplay Trophy with a score of 162,

Caroline Pilbeam was second with 164 on countback from Bridget Samuels and Sian Southerton, also scoring 164.

The winner of the Handicap Trophy was Bridget Samuels with a nett 142.

Second was Gill Twyford with a nett 145, third Jane Russell with a nett 146 and fourth was caroline pilbeam with a nett 148.

Heather Tidy, Caroline Pilbeam, Bridget Samuels and si an south er ton had the best gross scores and went on to play in the knockout for the Championsh­ip Trophy on Finals Day a week later.

The semi- finals were played in sunny but gusty conditions in the morning.

Sian Southerton won against Heather Tidy and Bridget Samuels won against Caroline Pilbeam.

In the afternoon the conditions became cloudier and colder but spectators were rewarded by a thrilling match with Bridget Samuels narrowly winning over Sian Southerton with the final putt on the 18th green.

The men’s section also got their club championsh­ips played.

Andy Brown played Olly Longlands in the first semifinal, with Andrew Field against Gary Maskell in semi-final two.

Andy Brown beat Olly Longlands3& 2 and andrew Field beat Gary maskell 1 up.

This meant the two Andrews/andys played each other in the final.

Andy Brown proved too strong for the new Captain and won the final 4 & 3 to lift the men’s club championsh­ip trophy for the fifth time.
