Strangest racing season continues

The strangest season Goodwood has ever had comes to an end on Sunday.

The final fixture of 2020 is another that will go ahead in front of empty stands.

It will bring to 13 the total number of meetings held at Goodwood this season – only six fewer than normal.

And while staff have done extremely well to get that many on, all shown liveo neither itv or Racing TV, they will be disappoint­ed they did not get permission to let racegoers into any.

They were ready to admit 5,000 to the final day of Glorious Goodwood as part of a national test run of crowds returning to elite sport events, only for No 10 to pull the plug 24 hours before the gates were due to open.

For Sunday, 166 entries have been received ahead of final declaratio­ns for eight races, which run from 1.15pm to 5pm. All eight are live on racing TV and the highlight is the listed October Fillies’ Stakes at 2.55pm.

Meanwhile font well park’ s behind- closed- doors programme continued with fixtures last Friday and saturday, which in normal times would have doubled up as two days of Oktoberfes­t fun.

Friday’s racing, which comprised eight races, included two victories for trainer Chris Gordon. who prevailed with 7/2 shot Lord Baddesley in the Final fur long podcast novices’ Hurdle and Pres (11/4) in the Sky sports racing conditiona­l Jockeys’ Handicap Chase.

On Saturday Sean Quinlan and trainer John Bridger teamed up for an 11/1 success with Alka Step in the Bigmore Associates Mortgages Conditiona­l Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.
