Fundraiser to help fix canal’s eroding banks
Chichester Canal is asking residents for support as it campaigns for funding to repair the banks of the popular waterway.
Along with encroaching vegetation, the canal banks are slowly being eroded and need significant repairs to ensure they support the towpath, are safe for footpath users and for waterway users.
“Some of the work is and can be undertaken by the canal’s enthusiastic band of volunteers, however some necessitates the involvement of professional companies,” said Catherine Cannon, trustee and vice chair of Chichester Ship Canal Trust.
“Sadly, like many other small charities, our income has been severely reduced due to Covid-19. Contrary to popular belief we receive no funding from local authorities – everything we do at the canal is wholly selffunded. The virus has had a severe impact on our ability to generate income to repair and maintain the canal.
“We are, however, very grateful to all those who have supported the canal, whether through visiting our café or enjoying a boat trip’.
“The cost to return the banks to good order is around £200,000. We need your help to raise these funds to keep your canal safe, secure and enjoyable for you, your family and friends now and in the future. To kick this off, we are launching a short crowdfunding campaign to raise £10,000. This approach means we could benefit from West Sussex County Council Community Initiative Funding. Please support us and pledge by 1st December 2020.”
