Times have changed in town – here’s how

Staff and volunteers are keeping Emsworth Museum safe and busy.

The site complies with government Covid-19 advice and recommendations and contact details for track and trace are recorded manually or by QR code for visitors with the appropriate mobile phone.

Continuing until November 1 at the museum is an exhibition called Emsworth Past and Present.

Over the years many changes have taken place in the town and the surrounding area and this display of photographs, from the museum collection and also from personal albums, illustrates some of them.

A century ago employment opportunities for Emsworth men were often a choice between boat building or as fishermen on the oyster smacks.

But with the increasing number of new houses being built the town is becoming an important centre for leisure sailing and related activities and with this the number and variety of cafés and restaurants has increased.

Bernie Gudge, Emsworth Museum’s photograph archivist, has selected a variety of pictures of Emsworth from past years and using photographs taken recently in the same locations he highlights how the scenes have changed.

This is an ideal exhibition for everyone who enjoys a trip down Memory Lane.

Meanwhile, the book Emsworth’s Plum, originally written by Linda Newell in 2004, has now been updated and edited by Dr Margaret Rogers.

Itdescribespgwodehouse’s time in Emsworth (1904-1914) and his use of names of local residents and places in his stories.

The book is on sale in Emsworth Museum at £8.

Emsworth Museum is open until November 1 on Saturdays from 10.30am to 4.30pm and Sundays, 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Admission is free but financial donations to help with the running of the Trust and museum are always very welcome.
