Conditions aren’t a burden to Cowdray winner

Cowdray Park Golf Club’s seniors played the fourth and final round of the Captain’s Prize in sunshine and on welcoming greens and neatfairwa­ys. Butconditi­ons were deceptive as only three players scored better than handicap.

In the pairs competitio­n, Burden and Ken Cullen werefirst with a combined score of 71. Two pairs weresecond­with67, Richard Mellor androgerpo­well and Chris ho are and michael br iant. Ho area ndBri ant were better on countback.

In the overall competitio­n for the Captain’s Prize, the clear winner was Allan Gormley with a total of 115 points for the best three scores. It’s an excellent total with an average per round of just over two shots better than his five handicap.

There were three players with 107, David Wickham taking second on countback from David Fowler andpeter Hallt.

The Podmore Salver, saw a marked contrast in the weather to recent weeks.

There were heavy bursts of rain at the start and in the afternoon, a cold wind throughout the round.

The Podmore Salver is a greensomes Stableford competitio­n with drawn partners, and with 84 entrants, there were some decent scores. The winners with a creditable 41 points were Chris Blatchly and Chris Hutchings. Second were Dave Coombes and Clif Davis with 40 points, and third with 39, on countback, were Adrian Poole and Nick Upjohn from David Cornthwait­e& Kencullen(39) and Eric Bounton & Allen Sibley (39).
