University of Chichester students studying musical theatre and arts development have been tasked with raising £20,000 for the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth. After a successful run of their show Made In Dagenham in March 2020, which raised funds for the theatre, the students are looking forward to beginning preparations for My Fair Lady in March 2021.

Reid and Georgia Hewitt have been working hard since returning to university in September to get their fundraising going. With nationwide restrictions due to Covid, they’ve had to adapt their normal fundraising methods and begin thinking of new and creative ways to raise money.

This lockdown they are kicking off their fundraising by collectively running

40km in fancy dress, hoping to bring a smile to those they jog past on the way. They have also challenged themselves to come up with the best-looking musical inspired bake. And team member Georgia is getting stuck into some books with a Read-a-thon, reading three new books a week for four weeks. They are also doing a virtual Christmas quiz on November 28. Tickets for this event will be sold online via Eventbrite where people can choose how much they wish to contribute.

Emily said: “The arts have suffered greatly throughout 2020 and the New Theatre Royal is no exception. Having just completed their own successful Crowdfunder, raising nearly £16,000, it still isn’t enough. Right now the theatre is facing its biggest challenge in its 160-year history as it relies on ticket sales for the majority of its income. Without immediate urgent funding its future is under threat. Donating via our Crowdfunder will help secure the existence of New Theatre Royal.”
