Universal Credit claims up - with those aged 50 to 54 worst affected
The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on the UK economy, with unemployment rising to a five-year high in the three months to December.
Analysis of Department for Work and Pensions figures by the Jpimedia Data Unit reveals the number of people claiming Universal Credit has more than doubled in each area of West Sussex – despite efforts to protect jobs through the government furlough scheme.
Chichester saw a 155 per cent rise in claimants, from 3,082 to 7,867, while Arun saw a 142 per cent rise, from 5,248 in January 2020 to 12,708 in January 2021 – meaning an estimated eight per cent of residents were claiming the benefit at the start of the year.
Universal Credit is available to low earners as well as those out of work, so some people on furlough could be receiving wage top-ups.
Across England, those aged 20 to 24 have been the worst affected, with a rise of 132 per cent in claimants. People in this age group were also most likely to be completely out of work or earning very little.
But in Chichester, those aged 50 to 54 were worst affected. This age group saw the largest rise in the number of claimants between January 2020 and January 2021, an increase of 202 per cent.
In Arun, there was a 172 per cent increase for the 50 to 54 age group.
A spokesperson for Chichester District Council said: “The coronavirus outbreak has affected everyone, and many of our residents have experienced financial difficulties, but we’re keen to assure people that there is a variety of support available to them if they are struggling to pay their bills during this challenging time, including for those in receipt of Universal Credit.
“It’s really important that anyone who is concerned about meeting the cost of their council tax or who is struggling financially contacts us as soon as possible so that we can help them in any way that we can. There may be additional help available to them that they’re not aware of. The easiest way to get in touch is by emailing benefits@chichester.gov.uk or by calling 01243 534509.”
The council also employs Choose Work co-ordinators who provide information, support and advice to help people move towards employment through oneto-one mentoring and workshops.
