District councillor for Pagham North June Hamilton (Opinion, September 23) states in her extremely negative letter that we all want to be green – but not at any price. Obviously the reality of climate change escapes her.

Imagine the reaction of the people with bloodshot eyes caused by the smoke of their homes burning in California, or the people in Bavaria who have had their main streets washed away, or islanders in the middle of the oceans, whose houses are disappearing into the sea and who now have nothing – all due to climate change – after she had read her letter to them.

Rampion 2 may not be the forever answer, but it’s one of the best answers that we have at the moment. Projects like this need to be embraced for the benefit of those who come after us and who will have to deal with the results of our rampant consumption.

Do we have to wait for the flames and smoke ripping through the South Downs National Park or severe storms taking more lives because of climate change before our leaders and counsellors take the situation seriously?

‘We all want to be green but not at any price and this price is far too high’.

Disasters brought about by climate change have taken vast amounts of the natural world from us, thousands of human lives have been lost and there’s species extinction on a regular basis throughout the world. Just how much of a price do you expect others to pay so you can have your way of life protected?

Or is it enough for you to pop the occasional tin into the recycling bin to do your bit and let someone else do the heavy lifting?

When the next opportunity to vote comes around it would be wise if we elected those that have a positive and can-do attitude that extends further than their own postcode. Think global, act local.
