RAFA 381 Bognor Regis Veterans’ Breakfast
Much to celebrate at this month’s Veterans’ Breakfast at the RAFA Club, attended by some 30 veterans from the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
Presenting the awards was the RAF Association’s, South and South-east Areas president, Air Commodore Allan Vaughan OBE.
North Bersted resident Ron Flatt was the first to receive an Area President’s Certificate.
Having served in the RAF’S Fire and Rescue Service and the London Fire Brigade, Ron came to Bognor Regis and became an active member of the RAFA Branch.
For a number of years he was the branch’s chairman and for the last five years its president, and remains so.
Second to step up for an Area President’s Certificate was Marion Mewett.
Marion has led the branch’s fundraising for the Wings Appeal for a number of years.
She and her team have always been in the top five large branches for funds collected, winning the trophy for best in class for several consecutive years.
Finally, a very special award, the Reverend Brian Shersby, our Chaplain, from 2006 to the beginning of this year, was granted Honorary Life Membership of the RAF Association for his outstanding service.
During that period he conducted the branch’s annual Battle of Britain and carol services, officiated at the Bognor Regis Armed Forces Day and at special services when commemorating RAF anniversaries.
He was also Chaplain to the Bognor Regis Air Cadet Squadron where, as a Civilian Instructor, he also taught radio communication.
Air Commodore Vaughan thank all the volunteers who had made the Bognor Regis one of the foremost branches and clubs in the association.
