Chichester area round-up

Words Out Loud, a charitable trust based in Chichester which grew out of a poetry competitio­n held during lockdown in partnershi­p with Wagtail Coffee and Yoga in Chichester, meets again on October 20.

Founder Ken Jones said: “The latest in the Zoom featured-reader series will start as usual at 6.30pm. October features Chichester poet Piers Rowlandson. Piers is a regular at our Open Mic events on Zoom and in person at Wagtail.

“He has been writing poetry for pleasure for many years and has also recently published several collection­s of his work.

“He was brought up in

West Sussex and learnt to sail in Chichester Harbour. Educated at Marlboroug­h College, Piers went on to become a consultant paediatric­ian and has sailed two Atlantic crossings.

“The Zoom series continues to have an internatio­nal flavour with regular Zoomers from California and other US states and from Mexico.”

Selsey concert

52 Strings and a Bow is the concert on October 17 in St Peter’s Church, Selsey.

Baum said: “Peter Fisher and his violin will return to Selsey but this time he will bring Dorothy Linell.

“Both are internatio­nally renowned musicians who separately and together have delighted audiences with their unusual combinatio­n of violin, guitar, baroque guitar, lute and theorbo, with a programme of music, some of which has been specially adapted by the performers for this unusual combinatio­n of instrument­s.

“This will be a historical musical tour from the Baroque to the present. Peter and Dorothy are passionate about their music and they will give a short entertaini­ng introducti­on to each piece. “

Night of comedy

A comedy duo who attracted the largest audience ever for Wemsfest’s Comedy at The Club are set to make a return on Friday, October 15 at 8pm.

Raymond & Mr. Timpkins Revue appear at Emsworth Sports and Social Club where they broke all previous attendance records three years ago.

Promoter Mark Ringwood said: “The Portsmouth­based comedians, who have appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, describe their show as ‘lightning fast choreograp­hy meets uber-swift editing’, ‘the whole effect being of a slim man and a fat man putting their bums in your face.’

“The result last time was a standing ovation which went on for five minutes.

“As always Jeff Lane will MC the evening which includes three additional comedians – Hetty Austin & Nathan Eagle and Juliet Myers.”

Chichester Jazz Club

Chichester Jazz Club welcome the Philip Clouts Quartet on Friday, October

15 to The Pallant Suite, Freemason’s Hall, 7 South Pallant, Chichester, PO19 1SY.

Philip Clouts – piano is joined by Sam Eagles – saxophones, Tim Fairhall – bass and Ted Carrasco – drums, offering melodic jazz with inspiratio­ns from around the world.

Spokeswoma­n Melissa Hauffe said: “Cape Townborn pianist/composer Philip Clouts’ South African roots have inspired a voyage of discovery that has led to him soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso, the bluesy melodies of Middle Eastern praise songs, the exuberant sway of Cuban guaguanco rhythms and the tuneful essence of Gospel while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, and Charles Lloyd.

“Since moving to Dorset in 2006 he has responded to his new surroundin­gs with impression­istic compositio­ns that complement his world music interests, resonating with strong themes and packing a mighty rhythmical punch. He is joined by rising

star saxophonis­t Samuel Eagles, bassist Tim Fairhall and drummer Ted Carrasco, bringing his musical journey alive with superb musiciansh­ip and infectious vigour.”

Admission £15 for guests, £8 for members, students enjoy a special entry price of £5 but this reduces to £3 for student members. Tillington concert

Tillington Church is hosting the UK Forces Veterans Show Band on Saturday, October 16 at 7.30pm.

Performing as a six-piece band on this occasion, they will be paying tribute to Glenn Miller, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and many more plus a WWII sing-along of favourite tunes from that era.

Ian Young, UK Forces Veterans Band musical director, said: “The UK

Forces Veterans Show Band consist of personnel who have served as musicians in all three services bands, the army, The Band of HM Majesty’s Royal Marines and Central Band of the Royal

Air Force. All members of the band have travelled and performed extensivel­y all over the world including appearance­s on television and radio broadcasts. They have also had the honour of accompanyi­ng the Queen and the Royal Family on numerous occasions, state tours at home and abroad.

“The musicians you will hear this evening, are experience­d in orchestral, rock, pop and any kind of jazz band or big band combinatio­n.

“After leaving the services, all members of the band have continued busy musical careers in teaching and performing, passing on their years of experience and skills to the younger generation of musicians of the future.”

Simon Bates Big Band

The Simon Bates Big Band plays The Empire Hall, Graffham on Saturday, October 16 at 8pm.

A spokesman said: “The Simon Bates Big Band is an 18-piece power station of musical magic. The all-star line-up assembled by top saxophonis­t and musical director to the stars Simon Bates includes Shirley Bassey’s lead trumpet player, members of funk band Incognito, a finalist of BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year, Van Morrison’s drummer, The Syd Lawrence Band’s front man and even a member of the Wombles!’

“Demonstrat­ion Lindy Hop/swing dancers will be there to show the way and provide ticket holders with an opportunit­y to practise before the event.

“The programme will be assembled from an exciting mix of classic instrument­al and vocal big band numbers from the great band leaders including Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington and from the stunning vocal arrangemen­ts sung by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Matt Monroe. The sound of all these musicians playing in the lively acoustics of The Empire Hall will take your breath away!”

Big-time wrestling

Big-time wrestling is coming to the Jeneses Arts Centre in Bognor Regis on Saturday, October 23.

Spokesman Kris Kay said: “Joint promoters SWF UK and Kapow Wrestling bring their action-packed family show to the Linden Road venue for the very first time and hope for a good attendance so they can bring top-quality wrestling shows to the town on a more regular basis.

“The show offers the opportunit­y to see live wrestling and join in the fun by booing the bad guys and cheering the good guys and generally letting off steam.”

Kris Kay himself, a 25-year British wrestling veteran, is performing.

Kay made his profession­al wrestling debut at the age of 14 appearing regularly for promotions in Bognor, Worthing and Brighton areas. Now nearly 40, the Southampto­n-based hard hitter is winding down his in-ring career and trying to get as many wins as possible to make sure he retires on a high.

“I have been there and done it. I have travelled the world and performed in some excellent venues over the years and in front of hundreds and thousands of crowds. Now it’s time to stay on these shores for my last few years.

“Another top name scheduled to appear is Major Lee Buff. The Bognor-born super soldier can’t wait to come home and said how much it means to him to perform in the town where he was born and spent his childhood. Other stars performing on the night include the current SWF ladies champion Rebel Kinny, Nightshade, Priscilla and the high flying Lionkid.”
