Medals put gloss on club’s league season

-

contd from sport back page Joe Stewart was next home for the U13 boys in 11th, with Ivo Edgar completing the scoring in 20th just in front of new member Lucas Bulger in 23rd.

Lewes’ good packing brought them home in 14th so the team positions remained unchanged and Chichester had to settle for fourth place.

For the U13 girls Isabella Lendrum had her best run to date in eighth with Isla Pearson close behind in 16th.

In the U15 age group, the boys’ team had to bring in a couple of replacements. To their credit, Harry Cruttenden and Isaac Siddle stepped up to the mark in 22nd and 23rd in a competitive field and with consistent Ben Stewart in sixth, the trio’s score of 51 points was enough for team bronze medals behind Eastbourne and Lewes.

Stewart’s placing was good enough for an individual bronze, a fine achievement as he has another year in the age group.

In the U15 girls’ race Molly Smithers made another step to recovery after injury with a steady 16th with Louisa

Fenmor Collins 29th.

Under-17s and seniors

In the women’s race, Chichester had hopes of team medals in three categories – the main seniors, the under-17’s, who ran concurrently, and the veterans.

Thanks to great teamwork, the ten-athlete squad achieved all three objectives with a couple of individual medals thrown in for good measure, including the club’s best gold tally of the day.

The one medal never in doubt was for the senior team who had established such a commanding lead in Division 2 after the first three fixtures tthat it would have needed a complete collapse to deny them promotion to Division 1.

It was Anya Barrett and Ela Pemberton who led the charge to finish overall seventh and 15th in the race with veteran Sarah Fenmor Collins 24th for a total of 46, well in front of their rivals.

Barrett and Pemberton also ensured team bronze for Chi in their U17 age group with fourth and seventh.

Not to be outdone, Fenmor

Collins won bronze for herself in the over-45 age group and fellow over-45 Lisa Pemberton led home the B team in 30th followed by Nadia Anderson in 50th and Kim Nelson 59th.

The combined veterans’ score of Fenmor Collins, Pemberton and Anderson was enough for an unexpected team bronze but Anderson had further cause to celebrate with an individual gold in her over-55 age group.

Four more veterans completed the scoring with Amanda Godfrey 65th overall and seventh v55, Ros Crawford 77th (v55 15th), Sue Baker 87th ( v65 4th) and Wendy Whelan, the only over-75 female athlete to tackle all four courses over the season at Goodwood, Ardingly, Brighton and Glyndebourne.

Chichester’s senior men were not as well represented but had a scoring quartet in Division 2 with Wesley Adams and Mikeey Kwoka having their best runs for 17th and 20th. Veterans Steve Davy in 71st (13th v50) and Peter Anderson 118th (14th v60) completed the scoring.
