Talented ten don Sussex colours

Donnington and Bognor Goodwoods bowlers have been busy.

DONNINGTON

Donnington Short Mat Bowls Club had a friendly against West Wittering in the opposition’s village hall venue.

They have not played at West Wittering for many years so it was a good chance meet the members and try out their new mats.

On mat one Donnington’s Steph Baverstock, Chris White, Janine Banham and skip Peter Whale were up against Brian Williams, Liz Williams, Alan Summerfiel­d and skip Gordon Silver, Donnington winning 17-14.

On mat two Donnington’s Mary Potter, Chris Willson,

Sue Coley and skip Allan Banham were facing Paul Chilvers, Tony Rice, Day Tu and skip Ray Stephens. It ended 21-15 to Donnington.

Liz Williams and the other Wittering players put on tea.

BOGNOR GOODWOODS

Bognor Hurricanes hosted Thakeham in a friendly. Hurricanes had a good result on one mat but Thakeham played some excellent shots on the second mat to earn a 43-43 draw.

Scores: Celia Foot, Ged Upton,neil Jackson and Alan Foot(skip) won 34-17; Tessa Frogley, Tony Morriss, Brian Goodland and Pam Andrews (skip) lost 9-26.

In a friendly at home to Norfolk the Hurricanes won on all three mats and 57-33.

Scores: Celia Foot, Neil Jackson, Clive Andrews, Alan Foot (skip) won 20-9; Joyce Abel, Tessa Frogley, Dean Rundle, Pam Andrews won 19-9; Ged Upton, Roger Hawke, Di Rundle, Brian

Goodland (skip) won 18-17.

In Division SW2 Hurricanes visited Crablands Avocets and took four points.

Scores: Marion Hatch,reg Hatch,dean Rundle, Clive Andrews (skip) won 38-5; Celia Foot, Di Rundle, Alan Foot, Pam Andrews(skip) lost 11-16; Joyce Abel, Tony Morriss, Neil Jackson, Brian Goodland (skip) lost 10-12.

Bognor Hurricanes hosted East Preston Blue in SW2 and won on all mats.

Scores: Peta Watters, Di Rundle, Reg Hatch, Clive Andrews(skip) won 28-11; Celia Foot, Marion Hatch, Alan Foot, Pam Andrews won 20-14; Ged Upton,tessa Frogley, Neil Jackson, Dean Rundle(skip) won 21-13.

Following their outstandin­g performanc­es at the Sussex schools cross country championsh­ips, 10 of the best Observer-area young athletes had the honour of representi­ng Sussex in the South East Inter-counties at Ardingly Showground.

The six counties involved are among the best of the 45 county teams which will be in action for the English Schools champiosnh­ips – with powerhouse­s Surrey, Kent and Essex joined by Hampshire, Berkshire and Sussex.

In this company there was an outstandin­g run from Ben Stewart to win the junior boys’ age group for school Years 8 and 9, the only Sussex winner of the day.

In the same race, Max Gayle was 41st and has the advantage of having another year in the same age group.

Stanley Wilkes and Sam Wyatt were 54th and 66th respective­ly in the Intermedia­te boys’ race while Harvey Mcguinness was 42nd in the senior boys’ race – making it a clean sweep of all six athletes from Bishop Luffa school.

After Stewart, Anya Barrett from Chichester College had the next best result with a fine eighth in the senior girls’ race.

Ela Pemberton shone for Hampshire in the intermedia­te girls’ race – the Chichester Runners member studies at Churchers College.

Twins Laila and Lillie Hellyer from Chichester Free School were 59th and 73rd in the same race while Elodie Hill was the third local athlete notch up a top 20 place with a superb 16th in the junior girls’ race.
