Six exceptional students from Years 6, 7, and 8 at Westbourne House School have brought home the

Mini Model United Nations Trophy, proving their mettle on the world stage – albeit a simulated one! Barbara Langford, Westbourne House School Deputy Head - Academic, explained: “Our team of six, representing Ghana, joined forces with 20 other countries (representing different schools) at this exciting event. Each student tackled global issues from Ghana’s perspective, engaging in lively debates using simplified UN protocols.”

Meet the young ambassadors:

Xander and Daisy tackled modern slavery in the International Labour Organisation.

Mya and Freddie navigated territorial disputes in the South China Sea within the United Nations Security Council.

Emily and Isaac championed the climatechanged child in the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Beyond debate, the competition held at Bryanston School in Dorset, emphasised core UN principles: peace, security, human rights, rule of law, and development.

Mrs Langford continued: “Respect and empathy were crucial for navigating discussions between countries. It was fascinating to see our students forge alliances during lunch breaks, securing votes and support to reach compromise positions in the afternoon sessions.” Empathy, a key learning strand at Westbourne House, was beautifully reinforced throughout the competition. The students exemplified:

Collaboration and listening to diverse viewpoints. Concern for society and active citizenship.

Cultural awareness and sensitivity to moral issues. Intellectual confidence to adapt beliefs based on new information.

This incredible victory is a testament to the dedication and talent of these young diplomats. Congratulations to them all and all the schools who took part!
