I’VE GOT ONE TOO

-

After reading about Ian Grundy’s oneowner 1977 GS750DB, I now know I’m not the only GS750 owner that still has an example that was bought new. Mine was purchased in 1980 for £1460, just after the GSX750 had been launched (an ugly bike in comparison to the GS). When I later bought a GSX750 in 1987, they offered me so little for the GS as part exchange that I decided to hang on to it.

When it was a couple of years old, I had to replace the silencers due to the baffles rotting away. Then, after a few more years, when the baffles rotted in the second set of pipes, I fitted a Motad four-into-one. That’s when I discovered the rattling noise that was worrying me was the inner pipes of the downpipes, which had also rotted. The Motad’s been fine ever since, but I would love to have the standard exhaust fitted again. The trouble is, they’re as rare as hen’s teeth. I’d love to know how Ian’s have lasted. Were they stored for some time while an aftermarket system was fitted to the bike? Although the engine of my GS750 has always seemed a little mechanically noisy since the first few thousand miles, it has always remained a reliable bike. There are a few parts I would like to replace – such as the seat, on which the edge of the steel base has rusted away in places – but the fact is that parts aren’t as easy to find for this bike as they are for the GT750.
