The GL1000 is more suited to cruising in comfort than backroads bend-swinging. Although the engine is renowned for long-term reliability, this may be running out on high-mileage examples. The earliest US market version, with blue backgrounds on the cambox badges, reputedly has hotter cams and a top speed nearer 130mph than 120mph. Chris Hunter of the Gold Wing Owners Club of GB Classic Section, says: “It’s very reliable and can cover 100,000 miles, although sometimes the clutch can’t cope with the power. Cam belts are good for 25,000 miles and can be cheaper if bought as Honda car spares; check the part serial numbers.” Prices range from £900 to £7000-plus for a real stunner.

In February’s Villiers Starmaker engine strip, we printed an incorrect phone number for Paul Powell’s company, cottonvilliersspares.co.uk – the correct number is: 07831 421455. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
