revival’s greatest racers talk shop
Sir Stirling Moss was joined by some of motorsport’s biggest names to share their racing opinions.
The Credit Suisse Racing Forum is an annual gathering held in the Control building of the Goodwood motor circuit – and a place for former drivers to wax lyrical about yesteryear.
Led by compere Henry Hope-Frost, this year’s theme was ‘Closed Cockpit versus Single Seaters: The Path to Motorsport Glory’, which led to goodhumoured bantering about which is the best way into Formula 1. Here are some of the best quotes from the meeting: sir stirling Moss OBe ‘ The secret (of racing) is putting your foot down and going fast.’ Jochen Mass ‘Promoters (for Euro races) have to pay up front. American promoters don’t – and it shows. Both sides need better circuits though.’
Derek Bell MBe ‘We’re in the entertainment business. Back in my day, people were entertained. But nowadays people aren’t.’
Dario Franchitti MBe ‘My dream as a kid was to drive in Formula 1. But the further up the ladder I climbed, the less I really wanted it.’
David Brabham ‘With Goodwood, there was always a fear factor – and that was good for race spectactors. With the current racing tracks there’s no fear factor.’
alain de cadenet ‘Bernie (Ecclestone) once nicked my wheels. Ten of them! And he then melted them down and said I could buy them back off him for £200 each!’
