Register’s bold, record-breaking bid needs your help

- Nick Larkin www.vauxhallfdregister.co.uk

Vauxhall enthusiasts are aiming to bring 50 FD models together to celebrate the model’s half century – but admit they have set themselves a tough challenge!

The FD Register has given itself the target of organising the recordbreaking gathering in time for the Vauxhall Opel Association’s National Rally on 8-9 July, and is encouraging owners of the curvaceous, well-loved saloons to join in.

FD Register chairman Chris Parsons says: ‘This is not going to be easy, though we have had 25 of the cars together in the past. They are rare classics nowadays.

‘ We just hope to get as many FDs to the event as possible. They don’t have to be immaculate – you can trailer them if you have to but please just get them there.’

The attempt will take place at this year’s VOA National’s venue, the Market Harborough Showground in Leicestershire, where more than 2500 owners of classic Vauxhalls, Opels and Bedfords will gather.

The Vauxhall VX4/90 Club, catering for the FD’s sportier sibling, is also supporting the event. There will also be a display of FC- and FE-generation models alongside the main display.

The FD was built in saloon and estate form from 1967-1972. The cars were the first to receive Vauxhall’s new belt-driven overhead cam engine and featured ‘Coke-bottle’ styling three years before the Ford Cortina MkIII appeared.

Possibly the most famous was the white Vauxhall Victor, registered RXD 996F, featured in legendary ITC drama Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased).
