The tough chas­sis rarely succumbs to se­ri­ous cor­ro­sion, al­though it needs check­ing for off-road dam­age and for any signs of rust around the body mount­ing points. And while un­der­neath look for a rusty fuel tank on the pre-1990 W460 mod­els; an orig­i­nal steel re­place­ment is a hefty £860.

Check that damp hasn’t crept in. Re­place­ment trim is out there, but it isn’t cheap.
