Look for rust bubbling around the front and rear screens and the side windows. And check that water isn’t entering the cabin via the front screen and bulkhead area; it needs to be caught early to avoid expensive repairs. The tough chassis rarely succumbs to serious corrosion, although it needs checking for off-road damage and for any signs of rust around the body mounting points. And while underneath look for a rusty fuel tank on the pre-1990 W460 models; an original steel replacement is a hefty £860.
Check that damp hasn’t crept in. Replacement trim is out there, but it isn’t cheap.
