Do not drive away.

Depending on the severity of the accident, check whether anyone is injured. If they are, contact the emergency services immediatel­y.

Obtain details from the other drivers involved: name, address, telephone number, insurance company and, if possible, driver’s licence numbers.

Note the details of the vehicle; make, model, colour and registrati­on number. If there are any witnesses, take names and contact details.

Keep a level head to be able to provide a consistent and accurate account of the incident. Should you possess a camera or smartphone, take photos of the incident and surroundin­g area.

Don’t apologise or admit any fault to the other party.

Inform your insurance company as soon as possible.
