David races a highly-mod­i­fied Austin Seven Ul­ster with the VSCC. He also built a fast-road Seven, with a lot of help from Ox­ford­shire Sev­ens and Rick­ets Au­to­mo­tive. Us­ing a cor­rectly reg­is­tered chas­sis and Rod Yates body he fi­nally set­tled upon a Don Raw­son ex-race engine, de­tuned by Rick­etts, with a Pigsty Rac­ing tri­als cam and sin­gle 1¼in SU. ‘It needed a race clutch and bet­ter brakes (hy­draulics at the front) along with a stronger rear axle and half­shafts. I’m about to fit a close-ra­tio gear­box, as the step from third to top is too great on a stan­dard gear­box. Whether build­ing or mod­i­fy­ing a Seven you must de­cide what you want it for. In­stalling a fast engine is only the be­gin­ning. Un­less you want much higher per­for­mance it may be bet­ter to stick with light tun­ing and im­proved brakes

and han­dling.
