You may get less classic character and charisma if you go for the MkIII version of the Golf GTI, but you’ll also pay a lot less than you would for the previous, purer, MkI and MkII generation­s. It’s not really worth buying a shoddy MkIII because good ones are still extremely reasonably priced. And, with the later GTIs and the VR6, you still get a lot of Teutonic bang for your British bucks – these are seriously potent machines, after all. There will come a point – probably soon – when prices start to rise. Why not be part of the gang before that happens?
