You may get less clas­sic char­ac­ter and charisma if you go for the MkIII ver­sion of the Golf GTI, but you’ll also pay a lot less than you would for the pre­vi­ous, purer, MkI and MkII gen­er­a­tions. It’s not re­ally worth buy­ing a shoddy MkIII be­cause good ones are still ex­tremely rea­son­ably priced. And, with the later GTIs and the VR6, you still get a lot of Teu­tonic bang for your Bri­tish bucks – these are se­ri­ously po­tent ma­chines, af­ter all. There will come a point – prob­a­bly soon – when prices start to rise. Why not be part of the gang be­fore that hap­pens?
