FIVE WAYS TO MAKE IT BETTER
ADD V8 POWER 1
One of the most tempting mods, but it’s not just a case of stuffing a V8 under the bonnet. Plenty of other parts and upgrades are required, and the parts bill alone can exceed £3k if you do the job properly. Chat to owners who have done the work so you understand what’s involved.
LIGHTEN THINGS UP 2
The steering isn’t especially heavy, but a swap to power assistance is a popular mod. There are various options, such as the hydraulic set-up from specialist Robsport, with the kit costing around £1100. Or you could opt for an electric arrangement such as one offered by S&S Preparations; it fits under the dash and is easily removed if a future owner prefers.
IMPROVE THE ENGINE 3
There’s a wealth of options, but some simple upgrades will improve performance and driveability without breaking the bank. Your first step is an electronic ignition system, starting at around £50. Then consider a stainless steel sports exhaust at £250 or so and a pair of performance air filters. Overhauling the SU carburettors is worthwhile, too, or you could opt for a Weber replacement
4 BRAKES
The standard brakes aren’t outstanding, but there’s little need to go too far unless you’ve improved the performance. A couple of hundred pounds will bag a set of uprated pads and discs which should prove ample, or you could just go for better pads at £40 a set.
IMPROVE THE RIDE 5
Front strut braces are cheap, while a set of polyurethane bushes (£200) will sharpen things up nicely. Alternatively, £500 will get you a set of uprated springs and dampers. Before committing speak to specialists and clubs about the best route to take.
