TOP AWARD FOR CCW PHOTOGRAPHER
Classic Car Weekly photographer and contributor, John Lakey, has won a photography award in the Goodwood Revival Credit Suisse Professional Photographic Competition for the second time.
It was chosen by a panel of experts – including Lord March, who is himself a keen photographer – as the winner of the action category in the contest.
The picture was taken on a Canon EOS 7D MkII on top of the pit wall during the Kinrara Trophy race as the light was fading.
John says: ‘Once I’d realised that the marshalls were unfurling that mechanical issue flag as the twilight fell in the Friday night race (taken 7.30pm), I set the camera up to try and catch something along these lines choosing a 30th of a second exposure time in the hope that they stood still for that moment, but obviously it was slow enough to blur the cars.
‘And it worked! Sometimes those ideas don’t but you have to try it when you see an opportunity. I was lucky that the two cars were in that formation so they make a nice visual triangle with the two marshals. The point of focus was the marshals, not the track, as I wanted them to be what the image was about.’
John also won the award in 2015 for a dramatic photo showing the moment an Austin A35 rolled in the St Mary’s Trophy race during the 2014 Revival. classiccars.credit-suisse.com/en/ goodwood/photo-contest
